Tips for calling your elected officials:
- Identify yourself as a constituent.
- Ask to leave a message for your specific legislator or elected official.
- Mention a specific piece of legislation. For example: “Please tell Senator/Representative (Name) that I support _______ (name of bill).
- State your reasons for the support or opposition to the bill.
- Ask for your Senator/Representatives’ position on the bill. You may also request a written response to your call.
Tips on writing an effective letter:
- State the specific purpose of your letter in the first paragraph and address only one issue per letter.
- Keep each letter to one page if possible.
- Give reasons why this issue matters to you. It is effective to add stories or examples to support your position.
- Salutations on the envelope should say “The Honorable (Last Name).
- Salutations in the letter should state “Dear Senator/Representative (Last Name).
- Add a thanks to your request. For example, “Thank you for your service to our state.”
- Include you name and address so that your legislator can identify you as a constituent.
Tips on writing an effective email:
- Put your home address in the subject line of the email so you are quickly identified as a constituent.
- Use the same guidelines above as for a written letter.
- It is always best to use your own words in an email.
