Legislative Update

February 26, 2015

Gas Tax

In a rare demonstration of legislative speed, the House and Senate passed a 45% gas tax increase and the Governor signed the bill in just a few days.  The FAMiLY LEADER opposed the legislation because of the damaging effect it would have on families’ budgets.  In light of the $1.4 billion increase in state spending just since 2011, we believe the state could have prioritized needs, cut unnecessary spending, and maintained roads and bridges without passing the burden on to families.

Bully Bill

The Governor’s anti-bully Bill, HSB 39, has passed out of sub-committee in the House and full Education Committee in the Senate.   While we obviously deplore ALL bullying, The FAMiLY LEADER is opposed to this Bill for two main reasons.  First, the Bill does not protect parents’ rights, in that it allows the school to NOT inform parents if their child is involved in bullying.  Second, the Bill expands school authority beyond school property.

Iowa already has an anti-bullying law on the books.  There is no need to add more burdens on school districts asking them to police behavior off school grounds.  Also, parents should always know what is happening with their kids while at school.  We are asking members of the House Education Committee to vote “NO” on HSB 39.

A great day for life!

A Constitutional Amendment was filed in the House and Senate Thursday, confirming that life begins at conception.  Senator Dennis Guth and Representative Greg Heartsill filed companion bills that state, “The inalienable right to life of every person at any stage of development shall be recognized and protected.”  These two champions were joined by Senator Mark Segebart and Representative Steve Holt, who each gave moving testimonials in support of life at the earliest stages of development.

We praise God for these four public servants as well as their co-sponsors: Senators Zaun, Rozenboom, Chelgren, Johnson, Sinclair, Kraayenbrink and Seng along with Representatives Wills, Salmon, Gassman, Windschitl, Fisher, Sheets, Baxter, Kooiker and Landon.  These folks deserve our appreciation for taking a strong stand for life.

In Christ,
