Informed Choice Banquet

Governor Mike Huckabee, Rachel and Jason Owen, and Governor Terry Branstad

The FAMiLY LEADER was blessed to be just one of the many sponsors of the Informed Choice banquet on Thursday night, featuring Governor Mike Huckabee.  The room was full of passionate pro-life supporters and activists who were treated to a wonderful night of presentations, starting with Governor Huckabee.  Also featured was Iowas Governor Terry Branstad and Informed Choice Director, Rachel Owen.  Each shared their passion for life, and how they were doing their part to support and defend the defenseless.

The part that struck us most was Rachel Owens’ presentation in which she shared the work of Informed Choice of Ames.  They have been open only a short time, but have already had hundreds of clients and saved dozens of babies.  We were impressed with their focus of not only informing the clients of their options regarding abortion alternatives, but also sharing with them the good news of Jesus Christ!

The fundraiser was successful, raising enough funds to open a new location in Iowa!

We are thrilled to support such a wonderful organization, and we wish them the best!  You can learn more about the Informed Choice clinic network at

Medical Board Votes 8-2 to Save Babies

In an encouraging move, the Iowa Board of Medicine voted to ban “telemed” abortions – which are abortion pills administered by a doctor who never examines the patient.  This is dangerous medical practices, even if you aren’t talking about killing babies.

The Family Leader applauds the Iowa Board of Medicine for thoroughly considering the practice and making a measured response to protect women from bad medical practices.  We thank them on behalf of vulnerable women for being the adults in the room.  Wise decisions aren’t always popular with everyone, but real leadership is necessary to protect women from bad medicine.

Pro-Abortionists Sreaming, “Hail Satan” in TX Capitol

Many churches have been persuaded they shouldn’t be involved in politics because it is “secular” and they are “spiritual.”  But is that true?

Yesterday afternoon, this video was taken from inside the Texas State Capitol where pro-abortion activists screamed “Hail Satan” and “God is dead” to drown out pro-lifers who were peacefully singing Amazing Grace.

The pro-life bill just passed out of the House Committee. And it is now headed to the full floor for a vote.

This is clearly spiritual warfare.  Christians must realize that God is involved in all areas of our lives, including government.  If we ignore that “sphere” are we not being negligent in our practice of our holistic faith?

After watching this video, I suggest we think again. As you watch people associated with the pro-life movement sing “Amazing Grace,” their opponents associated with the pro-abortionist movement chant, “God is Dead.” If that isn’t enough, right at the end of the attached video a lady goes up to the camera exclaiming, “Hail Satan, Hail Satan…aah!”

Spiritual warfare is real, and Satan’s forces are attacking on all fronts – personal, family, religious, and governmental.  Should Christians not defend the same?

IRS Caught on Tape

By Todd Starnes at Fox News

An Internal Revenue Service agent was recorded on audiotape telling a pro-life organization that they had to remain neutral on the issue of abortion and lectured the group’s president about forcing its religious beliefs on others.

“You have to know your boundaries,” IRS agent Sherry Wan can be heard telling Ania Joseph, president of the Pro-Life Revolution. “You have to know your limits. You have to respect other people’s beliefs.”

The Alliance Defending Freedom said Joseph recorded the March 8, 2012 conversation during a two-year battle with the IRS to obtain tax-exempt status.

“You have the religious freedom; the freedom of speech,” Wan told the pro-life president. “And other people also have the civil rights; human rights. You cannot, you know, use your religious belief to tell other people you don’t have a belief. So I don’t believe you need the right to do this.”

ADF attorney Erik Stanley said the actions of the IRS are simply unconstitutional. Read entire article…

Google Pulls Pro-life Video

A highly-anticipated and much-promoted undercover video by Live Action, has been pulled by YouTube/Google under the claim it violates copyright, shortly after it was unveiled by Live Action.

Today, Live Action tweeted:

and then a few minutes later:

The pulled video had been touted as a significant release of unparalleled footage. It’s hard to believe proprietary film could have any copyright claims.  It seems that Google/YouTube deliberately pulled down the video because of political bias individuals have within the organization.

Inhuman is a campaign that Live Action has been rolling out over the last few months with a series of undercover videos.  This video focused on abortion clinics in Arizona.

Live Action was founded in 2003 as a pro-life club by then-fifteen-year-old Lila Rose.

Today Live Action is a new media movement dedicated to ending abortion and building a culture of life.  They use new media to educate the public about the humanity of the pre-born child and investigative journalism to expose threats against the vulnerable and defenseless.

Follow Live Action on Twitter @LiveActionFilms, and see all the action at #Inhuman.

Week #17: A Gosnell in Iowa?

Life is Sacred!

righttolifeAs the Iowa Legislature moves toward adjournment, we are still working for a provision in the Health and Human Services budget to prevent your tax dollars from going to abortionists.   The House amendment, H-1378, that we are supporting has a chance of passage this Session.  Events on the national and Iowa scene undergird why we need to stop this in Iowa.  Consider the following reports:

The Heritage Foundation questions “tax money for abortionists” in light of Gosnell

heritageSarah Torre at the Heritage Foundation wrote an article linking the Gosnell case to continued government payments to abortionists like him.  She concluded her piece with the following statement:

“In light of the brutality that became commonplace at [Gosnell’s abortuary] and has appeared elsewhere, policymakers should rethink continued financial support for an industry that creates and supports the likes of Gosnell.”

Dr. Jill Meadows – Iowa’s Kermit Gosnell?

U.S. Congressman has questions for Iowa

tommilleragIowa Attorney General Tom Miller recently received a letter from U.S. Congressman Bob Goodlatte, the House Judiciary Committee Chairman.  Rep. Goodlatte apparently is asking all fifty state Attorneys General to provide information on their states’ laws, regulations, inspections and litigation of Gosnell-type abortion centers.  As of this report, it is unclear if Attorney General Miller plans to respond to Rep. Goodlatte’s request for information.  A copy of the letter sent to Virginia’s Attorney General is here.  We understand Iowa’s letter is similar.

Concluding Action:

PLEASE let your voice be heard on behalf of Iowa’s voiceless—call or email your Rep. and Senator NOW, in the final hours of this Session:  “NO MORE tax dollars to abortionists!”

Thank you, and may God bless our efforts together to save the least of these, the tiniest members of our human family!

Education Reform

school-choice1Governor Branstad’s education reform initiative remains alive.  Representative Jorgensen, Republican from Sioux City and the House leader on education, said his fellow Republicans will stand firm in support of home-school families and private school relief.  A few Senate Democrats are reportedly holding out in resistance to any relief for parental choice in education.  Please contact and encourage your state Senator to support home school and private school parents.

IRS Tries to Trap Iowa Groups

pplogoIn a story that keeps getting deeper and deeper, the IRS investigations continue, and are now dovetailing with the abortion giant, Planned Parenthood.

As The Examiner reported: “During a House Ways and Means Committee hearing today, Rep. Aaron Schock, R-Ill., grilled outgoing IRS commissioner Steven Miller about the IRS targeting a pro-life group in Iowa.

“Their question, specifically asked from the IRS to the Coalition for Life of Iowa: ‘Please detail the content of the members of your organization’s prayers.’”

In a Des Moines Register blog post, the Coalition for Life of Iowa was also featured, and CFLI President Sue Martinek said, ““We were singled out,” she said of the IRS inquiry. “The only action they seemed concerned about was our protests at Planned Parenthood, and that shouldn’t concern the IRS.”

lifesignsShe’s right. In fact, the IRS went even further and insisted that all board members sign a sworn declaration promising not to picket/protest Planned Parenthood.

But like a bad late-night infomercial, “There’s more!”

KCCI-TV in Des Moines reported that the Tea Party of America, based in Iowa and founded by Ken Crow, were also targets of the extreme Left IRS tactics.

It’s getting so bad that Iowa Representative Chip Baltimore stated in a Des Moines Register blog post he wants to collect all cases that may still be out there, and promises to give support for anyone who suspects they may have been harassed by the IRS.

rubiofoxIn an on-camera interview with Fox News, Senator Marco Rubio, (R-FL) accurately describes all that is going on with the IRS and points the responsibility to the Obama Administration, saying that Obama is creating a “culture of intimidation.”

FRC logoAnd, as the Family Research Council said in their Thursday email entitled “A Torrent of Tyrants”:

While the President tries to contain the IRS scandal by firing the acting chief, new details are trickling out about the administration’s ideological harassment. According to the Washington Examiner, the corruption went straight to the top, as even the President’s pals seemed to have power over which groups were approved for tax-exempt status. In one instance, even Planned Parenthood seemed to hold sway in the application of Coalition for Life of Iowa. The IRS specifically withheld approval until the Coalition sent a letter “with the entire board’s signatures, stating that, under perjury of the law, they do not picket/protest outside of Planned Parenthood.” The IRS explained that only when they received that letter would their application be approved.

If that isn’t government tyranny, I don’t know what is. The administration was actually withholding the group’s nonprofit status until it surrendered its constitutional rights to peacefully assemble. It’s almost Orwellian, the extent to which the IRS was willing to go to control people’s thoughts and actions. And obviously, this goes well beyond the tea party to a direct assault on pro-family, pro-life conservatives. So it comes as cold comfort to our movement that the Justice Department–which has its own vendetta against pro-life groups–is heading up the IRS’s criminal investigation. Under President Obama, the DOJ has relentlessly targeted pro-lifers with frivolous lawsuits, which judges have consistently rebuked for their “chilling effect on free speech.” Forgive us for being skeptical that the DOJ could put its agenda aside long enough to prosecute this wrongdoing!

Gosnell: GUILTY

The jury found abortionist Kermit Gosnell guilty of three counts of first degree murder.

Sentencing will commence next week.

The implications of this verdict are tremendous.  First of all, this is the first time an abortionist has been convicted of murder.  This brings up the philosophical question of when does life begin, and when should the law provide protection for that life?  Since Roe v. Wade, it has been after the baby was born and completely out of the womb.  With this verdict, these questions are going to be challenged and need to answered with more clarity than they have historically.  This is a time when anyone who believes life begins at conception to be talking about this with your friends and coworkers.  Frankly, the law needs to be updated to match what science can now tell us about the development of a person in the womb.

Be in prayer that this trial and conviction will have a positive impact on the pro-life movement.

Week #16: Lawmakers Holding the Line for Life!

House Lawmakers Holding the Line for Life, saying, “No tax dollars to abortionists”

“…funds appropriated under this section shall not be distributed to any person, as defined in section 4.1, who participates in the willful termination of human life.”

The Iowa House of Representatives, on May 1, 2013, included those words in amendment H-1378 to Senate File 446 and returned the bill to the Democrat controlled Senate.  We again extend our compliments and gratitude to Representative Matt Windschitl and Floor Manager Dave Heaton for their clear pro-life leadership in drafting and passing this measure.

The bill (SF 446) is now in a conference committee comprised of 5 Senators and 5 Representatives.  We expect the conference committee to pursue a compromise sometime next week.

The question remains; will the Republican controlled House be able to keep this pro-life provision in the final conference committee report?  Senate File 446 is a huge Health and Human Services budget bill and only one of ten such bills yet to be passed before the Legislature adjourns.

We are encouraged that many Pro-life Republicans have made it clear that retaining this protection for unborn babies is essential if they are to vote for any compromise.

Let’s make sure we hold them up in prayer and offer them our words of encouragement in these final days of the session.

Education Delays Adjournment

school-choice1Education reform, a priority of Governor Branstad’s, continues to delay legislative adjournment.  Most of the public discussion deals with teacher pay, evaluations and student testing.  Relief for home school families and private schools is still included in the legislation. Families that value home school and private school education need to be vigilant as a final compromise is considered.  At The FAMiLY Leader we believe that if massive spending increases for public schools is approved it is only fair that additional freedom from government be proved to parents that choose private instruction.

Encourage your legislator to support private and home school freedom in ANY final compromise on education reform.
