TFL Position on IA Gas Tax Increase

Today, The FAMiLY LEADER has registered in opposition to the proposed ten-cent (.10) gas tax increase in Iowa. TFL continues to provide support for a wide variety of issues that positively impacts Iowa and America’s families. However, after careful study, we believe, as do a growing number of others, that this proposed tax hike will significantly impact Iowa family budgets and discretionary expenditures, resulting in a negative ripple effect through Iowa’s economy.

That said, TFL views the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges as an important function of government. However, with a 23.7% increase in state government spending over the past four years, growing Iowa’s budget from $5.9B to a proposed $7.3B in real dollars, we cannot support any additional taxation on the backs of Iowa families and businesses to subsidize the thirst for bloated government. Proper stewardship of taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars demands no less.

Should the Governor and/or legislative leadership balance this proposed tax hike with real tax relief to Iowa’s families and businesses, along with a substantiated and accountable plan to reduce the size of government by an equal or greater amount, The FAMiLY LEADER will consider changing its support from “against” to “for.”
