With the fall elections rapidly approaching, The FAMiLY Leader is preparing for a great opportunity to impact the future of Iowa families and the direction of our nation. This cycle presents one of the most consequential governor’s races Iowa has seen in recent memory, a U.S. Senate contest that could determine control of the chamber, and several of the most closely watched targeted U.S. House races in the country.
We must not go backward. The significant legislative victories we have secured—protections for life, family, parental rights, and religious liberty—must be defended by preserving the pro-family majorities in the Iowa House and Senate.
This is a defining moment. Through prayer, engagement, and faithful action, we will work to elect leaders who honor God’s design for family and advance righteousness in government. Revitalizing Marriage
Children are most likely to thrive when they have married biological parents. God’s design works, and it’s no surprise that social science studies consistently demonstrate the benefits of marriage, especially for a couple’s children. Kids who grow up in a home with married parents have lower rates of poverty, stronger academic performance, fewer emotional problems, and lower rates of incarceration.
These benefits of marriage are widely accepted. Yet, fewer people are choosing to get married. In the 1960s, about 75% of adults were married. Today, that number is hovering around 50%. And about a quarter of American children live in single-parent households, the highest rate of single-parenthood in the world. We have a marriage crisis and desperately need a course correction.
TFL is working to revitalize the institution of marriage. We believe Iowa should educate young people on the benefits of marriage, incentivize couples with children to get married, and provide opportunities for struggling marriages to be repaired. These policy changes will be a top priority for us in the upcoming legislative session.
