The FAMiLY Leader Elections & Policy team had two significant policy victories last month that strengthen religious liberty and protect Christian families across Iowa.
These hard-fought successes reflect our unwavering commitment to ensuring that faith is not sidelined in our schools or in vital family services like foster care.
Victory #1: Students Can Freely Live Out Their Faith in School
In a landmark move, the Iowa Legislature passed SF2231, a bill that robustly protects students’ First Amendment rights. This legislation guarantees that Iowa students may express their religious, political, or ideological beliefs in school assignments, presentations, and extracurricular activities—without fear of discrimination or censorship.
The bill also removes outdated prohibitions that previously restricted the use of certain public funds for programs, materials, or courses that include religious content. This commonsense reform levels the playing field so that Christian students and student-led groups are no longer treated as second-class citizens in their own schools.
“This is an excellent implementation of the First Amendment and a tremendous win for Christian students and families,” said The FAMiLY Leader. For too long, public schools have suppressed biblical worldview perspectives while elevating others. SF2231 changes that equation and sends a clear message: faith belongs in the public square, including the classroom.
Victory #2: Protecting Christian Foster Care Parents and Agencies
In another major advancement for vulnerable children and faithful families, both chambers of the Iowa Legislature passed SF473. This bill prevents Iowa’s foster care and adoption system from discriminating against prospective parents solely because of their religious beliefs regarding marriage, gender, and sexuality.
The FAMiLY Leader worked diligently with legislators to strengthen the bill through a key amendment that explicitly protects Christian foster care and adoption agencies. These organizations can now continue operating according to their deeply held biblical convictions without facing government coercion or closure.
This victory is personal for many Iowa families. Strong, faith-filled homes are often the very best places for children in crisis. By safeguarding religious liberty in the foster system, SF473 ensures that more loving Christian parents and agencies can step forward to care for kids who desperately need stable, values-driven homes.
Together, we are building a culture that honors God, protects children, and defends the rights of believing families. These victories are not the finish line—they are momentum for the road ahead.
